Travel and visas


Travel

The University of York is located just 2 miles from York train station where frequent trains run to from the North and South. There are also several airports with easy transport links to York.

By air
There are good travel links from the following airports: Gatwick, Heathrow, Stansted, Leeds Bradford, Luton, Manchester and Newcastle. Full details on travel from each of these airports are available here

By train
York is on the main East Coast Line from London King's Cross to Edinburgh. Fast trains leave from both north and south at frequent intervals. There is also a direct service across the Pennines between York, Leeds and Manchester Airport. The University is two miles from the railway station and you will need to get a bus or taxi onto campus. For information contact National Rail Enquiries (tel: +44 (0)8457 484950).

Visitors to the University should board the Unibus, the Pullman Number 44 bus or the or the First Group number 4 bus which are the University of York's preferred transport supplier, at the railway station. These operate approximately every 10 minutes. The scheduled journey time is 20 minutes.

By coach
You can reach York by coach from many destinations around the country. National Express buses stop at the railway station. More details are available from their online coach timetable.

By car
The easiest route to the University is to take the outer ring road (A64 on the south and east sides of the city, A1237 around the north and west) to the junction with the Hull/Bridlington roads (A1079/A166). Turn off at the exit marked University and follow the signs past Grimston Bar and down Field Lane to University Road. This route avoids the City centre and known traffic blackspots.

Parking - University of York
Visitors can park in the pay and display car parks on Heslington West.

Taxis
A journey by taxi from the railway station to Heslington West will take approximately 15 minutes. There is a taxi rank just outside the station (Station Taxis). For pick ups from the University, the preferred taxi company is Six Five Nine (Tel: +44 (0)1904 659659).

Visas

Citizens of the European Union do not need a visa to enter Britain. If you are from any other country, find out about visa requirements before you travel by visiting http://ukvisas.gov.uk.
